Relax, don't worry – have a home brew!

JLo’s Jolly IPA – VanBrewers Homebrew Competition 2011

with one comment

A few weeks ago, I submitted an IPA to the VanBrewers Homebrewing Competition.  I really wasn’t sure what to call it, so I used a name that I had originally intended for a holiday beer:  JLo’s Jolly IPA.  I think it fits – I’m pretty jolly when I’m enjoying it 🙂

Total: 35/50

Score Guide: Very Good

Aroma – 10/12

Citrus hops.  A touch catty.  No DMS, No Diacetyl, No Alcohol, No Acetylaldehyde.

Appearance – 3/3

Coppery. Slight haze. Fine, tan head with good retention.

Flavor – 12/20

Citrus hop flavors come out. Some plastic phenol notes in the middle. Malt comes in the finish, well balanced & smooth.

Mouthfeel – 4/5

Medium body & carbonation make a creamy mouthfeel, no astringency.

Overall Impression – 6/10

This is quite good aside from the phenols, treat water with campden tablets or carbon filters to fix this.  Many competitions would disqualify your bottle, which would be a shame, stick to 12oz crown caps.

  1. […] I’ve been relaxing this evening, drinking Swan’s Extra IPA and Driftwood Fat Tug – both 5 star beers in my opinion.  So it may not be a fair time to write this review of Vista IPA…  but I know this batch has some flaws and this review has been on my mind for a few weeks.  Vista IPA is a recipe that I’ve been playing with for most of my homebrewing ‘career’.  It started around Christmas 2010, an extract and partial mash beer based on Dan’s Grapefruit Bitter.  I cranked up the hops, but mostly kept the ratio of pale malt, carastan and wheat.  I entered the beer in the VanBrewers 2011 competition as JLo’s Jolly IPA and it did quite well, with 40/50 and 35/50 scores.
